The Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival was a bliss filled weekend, so bliss filled in fact, that there is no way we would remember who played if it weren’t for our Official Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival T-shirts sporting the extensive line-up on the back. If you were at the festival and didn’t get a chance to pick one up then, here’s your chance. If you weren’t at the festival, here’s your chance to lie and have irrefutable evidence that you were there. Simply cut and paste a photo of your face with the included picture of the neo-grunge kids and show it to folks while wearing the shirt. Tell everyone that Green River ruled. People will be very impressed; people are easily impressed.

On August 5th, Brooklyn’s Oxford Collapse are giving the world BITS, their latest record, and here at Sub Pop, we couldn’t be more motivated to sell you this record! Don’t believe us? How about this: if you pre-order BITS by August 5th, we will throw in, at no extra charge, a very special, very limited photograph taken by Oxford Collapse while on tour. We say very limited because we had doubles printed so the band could have a copy too; so each photograph is limited to two. We only have 100 different photographs to give away, so act quickly! Incentivizers that we are, you’ll also be receiving stickers and buttons crammed into your order! That’s just how we do.

From the perspective of any Sub Pop Records employee, every Sub Pop release date is a day worth taking off to celebrate the many joys of Somewhat Independent Record Label Rock Music.

Though it may not officially be the start of summer, June 3rd offers the brand-new, self-titled full –length debut from Fleet Foxes. And Fleet Foxes sure sounds a lot like summer to us. In the completely unbiased and otherwise perfect perspective of your good and trustworthy friends here at Sub Pop Records, we can think of no better way to celebrate this change of season than through the purchase of this particular record album. That’s the real take-home here. And, if you pre-order Fleet Foxes on CD or LP you’ll automatically receive $2 off! That makes the CD $10 and the LP $12! The glorious gate-fold LP version, by the way, comes with a digital download code, and includes the Sun Giant EP on a second, enclosed piece of vinyl. And due to our penchant for pandering to potential record-purchasers, we’ll throw in some Fleet Foxes-related stickers and a button! Farewell fine fans of Fleet Foxes (it has been suggested, in some quarters or these very offices, that my fondness for alliteration approaches a fault or even failing…).

Pick up Fleet Foxes here

On May 6th, we at Sub Pop will be doing the world a real solid by releasing the first proper No Age full-length! It’s called Nouns and will be available in CD, MP3 and mind-blowing, fidelity-maximizing LP format (complete with a coupon to download the entire album as MP3s). And, in our ongoing quest to turn your money into our money, through the charming, old-timey concept of “selling music,” we are really piling on the incentives. If you pre-order Nouns by May 6th, you’ll receive a limited-edition poster featuring an Ed Templeton photograph of No Age, covered with a drawing by this same, broadly-talented artiste, Mr. Templeton (see rotating photos associated with this post for a visual representation of what the previous sentence described). Plus, as if this amazing record weren’t incentive enough, we’re throwing in some free No Age-related stickers and a button.

Not that we really need to sweeten this pot, but if you pre-order the new CD by March 18th, we’ll take 2 bucks off our already strikingly low price of $12, thereby only charging you, esteemed and intelligent consumer, a measly $10.

On March 4th, we’re releasing our first album with New Zealand’s The Ruby Suns. It’s called Sea Lion and is ten tracks of globe-trotting, Tropicalia-infused psychedelic pop, sprinkled with references to the Beach Boys, Eno and a ton of others. Like many of our favorite NZ exports, this record is a constantly unfolding wonder, inventive and wide-ranging. And, if you pre-order Sea Lion by March 4th, we’ll take $2 off the already low Sub Pop Megamart price of $12, making it $10 for you, you super intelligent consumer of Sub Pop wares whose ass we are forever trying to kiss. And just like all of our online orders, we will include stickers and possibly even a button; because we like getting you excited about buying things from us. Actually, we mostly just like the part where you buy things from us – but the excitement is nice, too.

And, if you pre-order Saturnalia on CD or on glorious, incredibly expensive 180-gram, double LP by March 4th, you’ll get $2 off the regular Sub Pop Megamart price (that’s already $2 off the retail price – generosity is totally our thing). Also, being the deal-sweeteners that we are, we’re going to give the first 200 pre-orderers a CD booklet autographed by both Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli. That’s a limited offer, folks – when they’re gone, that’s it. And as with all of our online orders, you’ll get Gutter Twins-related stickers and buttons. Generosity, that’s just how we don’t not do.

Orders have exceeded the amount of autographed CD booklets we have. If you’d like to try and get one of them still, try ordering through Newbury Comics here.

Again: the autographed CD booklets are now gone!

Attention! As we have mentioned from time to time here on the Sub Pop web thingy, most of the LPs that we put out come with an enclosed coupon enabling you to download all of the album’s songs as mp3s FOR FREE. The vinyl format for Saturnalia, for example, includes one of these very coupons.

Free Ltd. 7" with Grand Archives Pre-order

February 19th is probably going to be a pretty crappy day weather-wise wherever you happen to be, and unless you’re excessively goth, you’re probably gonna be pretty bummed about it. We here at Sub Pop had the remarkable foresight to bring you a record scientifically-designed and precision-engineered to combat any symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) you might be feeling. Your February 19th is going to be a little brighter with the debut from Grand Archives. Or, you could just hide all the knives in your house and curl up into a ball until spring. We think The Grand Archives makes a lot more sense. And, if you pre-order The Grand Archives on CD or LP by release date, we’ll throw in a bonus seven-inch (because vinyl sounds a little warmer or whatever). And just like all of our online customers, you’ll also get a button and a couple stickers! Because that’s just how we do.

Pick it up here.

OH! And the limited seven-inch is on the rarest of earthly elements – white vinyl!

Kelley Stoltz (totally) Does it Again!

It must be a gift from Zeus, or Jesus or whomever to have jobs where we almost never have to feign enthusiasm about the music we’re putting out. On February 5th, we’re releasing Kelley Stoltz’s
new album Circular Sounds. And it would be pretty nauseating if we were any more excited about it. It’s that good. But, don’t just take my word for it: buy it! From the here’s-me-trying-to-persuade-you dept.: We’ll toss in a couple of stickers and a button if you do! Because that’s just how we do.

A little more about Circular Sounds:
Circular Sounds is the fourth LP from San Francisco’s home recording auteur Kelley Stoltz
. Its 14 songs are a stereophonic advance on the lo-fidelity psych-fuzz of Antique Glow (Beautiful Happiness, 2004) and the mid-fi piano-rock of Below the Branches (Sub Pop, 2006): two modest masterpieces which, by a curious coincidence, both made #24 in MOJO magazine’s “Best Albums” list for their respective years. Kelley has also been praised by such esteemed publications as Uncut, Rolling Stone, Q, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out London, The Independent, and Ptolemaic Terrascope.

Circular Sounds is very much a pop record, in the classic ’60s mold. The horn-and-harmony-soaked romance suggesting Love covering “Good Day Sunshine” of “Everything Begins,” and the glorious, garage-psych dilation of “Your Reverie” are amongst the album’s 14 highlights. And these tracks boast Kelley’s fullest production to date: radio-ready yet retaining the organic warmth that gave his earlier work its character. He is no longer a marginal, ‘lo-fi’ artist: “I work in a second-hand record store and that’s made me more of a hi-fi advocate. It’s hard for me to listen to stuff that was recorded on a cassette player nowadays. By the last record I was mid-fi. I think I’m mid-hi now!”

We think you’re mid-hi too, Kelley. For realz.
Order here, folks.

Oh glory! A new Helio Sequence record for you to buy!

January, 29th marks the day of Sub Pop’s first release of 2008, courtesy of Portland’s The Helio Sequence. It’s been nearly four years since we’ve heard from Brandon and Benjamin and we couldn’t possibly be more excited about what they’ve come up with! It’s scientifically unpossible! Keep Your Eyes Ahead is the band’s best release to date – the wait has been totally worth it. Know what else? If you pre-order Keep Your Eyes Ahead by January, 29th on CD or LP, we’re going to throw in a CDR containing b-sides and outtakes from the record that we’re not-so-creatively calling B-Sides and Outtakes. Plus, you fortunate pre-orderers will also receive the band-related stickers and buttons that we’re forever patting ourselves on the back for including in our on-line orders. It’s an embarrassment of riches, we know.

Pick it up right here.

Sub Pop, Black Friday, and You!

Every Thanksgiving we, as Americans, stuff ourselves with a completely disgusting quantity of food. It’s one of the many rights given to us by the great, powerful and angry God above and/or the utter caprice of our birthplace. And after that, we sleep for 18 hours. We don’t actually know how this tradition started, but we’re pretty sure it was how the pilgrims built up their strength in order to endure the following day – Black Friday, the most shoppingest day of the year. Why, you didn’t ask, but we’re going to assume you did? Because the pilgrims knew that the holidays are all about buying stuff!!! And today that’s more truer than ever. Just ask your girlfriend, your kids, your mom, or whoever you picked for Secret Santa – they all totally want stuff from you. We at Sub Pop are here to make the otherwise tedious process of providing this stuff as painless as possible with our invention of ONLINE SHOPPING. Here’s what you do: Peruse our online store, or “Megamart,” select as many items as you like for all of your gift-giving needs and place them into your “shopping cart” (this is a virtual shopping cart, by the way, there is no actual, physical cart involved). We will then happily accept your money and send you some junk in the mail. Black Friday, Sub Pop and you: together we can help you send us your money.

For example, this limited-edition, autographed set of prints featuring artwork by Sam Beam is the perfect gift for any fan of Iron & Wine, or really anyone with discerning taste. Or maybe your loved one would love one of our proven cold-weather-fighting, zip-up, hooded sweatshirts bearing the Sub Pop imprimatur of moderate quality? Or just browse through our arguably vast catalog of CDs, LPs and t-shirts. And then buy some of that crap! Anyway you look at it, as a holiday gift-giver, you can’t lose!

Back to School—a greedy retailers three favorite words, and we here at Sub Pop are no different. Thankfully, we’re very proud of the merchandise that we’re peddling, so that makes us feel a lot better about the aforementioned greediness. So yeah, Back to School! With a little help from our hoodies, pullover or zip-up, you dudes are gonna look super rad for your school picture, or for that strapping young English teacher who also happens to be into the Shins. We also have brand new t-shirts available from Tiny Vipers and Handsome Furs as well as designs from many of your favorite older and less new Sub Pop bands. And hey, don’t stop there—we’ve also got a bunch of new posters available so you and your dorm room will be ready for class, in class!

We just flew back from the Pitchfork Music Fest in Chicago and boy are our arms tired! Alissa, Sam, and I spent three days in the Chicago heat to bring you all the best in/some of Sub Pop’s wares and we’d like to extend a hearty THANK YOU! to all that came by the booth to chat and, more importantly, buy some stuff from us. We’ve recently added the limited edition t-shirts we had for sale (Note: we will NOT be making more of these so get yours now!) as well as the killer vinyl sized tote bags that were seen hanging from the arms of kids in the know all over Union Park last weekend.

You may have been smart enough to pick up a Sub Pop sticker with a coupon for $5 off orders of $20 or more, but chances are that the directions are a tad confusing so let me explain how you’ll get your deal. Because we don’t have our coupon code area all set up on our new site we will be manually refunding your card the $5 when we see the secret code written in the comments section of your order. This may take an extra day or so, but be assured that your refund will show up! We apologize for any inconvenience but later’s better than never, especially when it comes to money.

Again, nice to see you all, and thanks for stopping by!

Magnet Magazine's "75 Lost Classics": We Found Eight of Them

In the new, Spring 2007 issue of Magnet Magazine, there is, fittingly enough (it’s their 75th issue), an article entitled “75 Lost Classics.” The fine folks at Magnet describe it like so!

They’re nobody’s buzz bands anymore. But since 1993, MAGNET has discovered and documented more great music than memory will allow. The groups may be broken up or the albums out of print, but this time, history is written by the losers. Here are 75 of the finest albums that time forgot.

Good news, gang! We found eight of them! (Nine, if you count the indie-pop/twee sidebar that featured a picture of Trembling Blue Stars and talked about their Broken by Whispers album from 2000, but actually picked The Lucksmiths’ album The Green Bicycle Case…)

And, in even better news, we would like to sell these Lost Classics to you!

Still in print:

Pond Pond (1993) – on CD for $9 and LP for $7.
Velocity Girl Copacetic (1993) on CD for $9 and LP for $7.

We’ve been talking about making these sweatshirts for about as long as I’ve been working at Sub Pop and now they are finally a living, breathing (not really) reality and I am so excited I could crap myself. Without further ado—I give you the SUB POP SWEATSHIRT, available in sizes small through extra large in zip-up or pull-over.

Free mp3s with vinyl purchase!

Here’s the deal:

Starting with our first release in 2007 (the new Shins record) and continuing on until such time as we lose interest or forget, if/when you buy a Sub Pop release in the vinyl format, you will find a coupon enclosed. And on this coupon will be instructions, a url and a unique code for you to download the mp3s for the album you’ve purchased.
Pretty simple.

Please note that these coupons, and their associated access to free mp3s, will not magically (or otherwise) appear in albums released before January of 2007.

There is some more info on all this business here.
